📖 The Fiqh of Zakat on Modern Investment Portfolios
Zakat on publicly traded equities is one of the most critical contemporary areas of Islamic wealth management. Under resolutions from AAOIFI Standard No. 35 and the OIC Islamic Fiqh Academy:
- Trading vs. Compounding Intent: If you buy shares with the intention of actively selling them when the price rises, they are treated as trading merchandise (Urud al-Tijarah), and Zakat is paid on 100% of the current market value.
- Long-Term Net Quick Assets Method: If you hold shares for multi-year dividends and business growth, fixed assets (factories, equipment, and brand goodwill) are 100% exempt from Zakat. You only pay Zakat on the company's liquid working capital (cash, trade receivables, and inventory minus short-term debt).
- The 25% Benchmark: For practical ease, many contemporary scholars allow investors to apply a 25% proxy factor against their long-term equity market value, paying 2.5% on that portion.
